Short description of Mekele
Mekele is the capital of Tigray and grew into that role when Emperor Yohannes made it his seat in the late eighteen hundreds, leaving a stone palace that now holds his throne, his bed and his rifles. A memorial on the hill above remembers the fighters who brought down the Derg. For years the town was where every expedition into the salt desert began, and the camel caravans still bring their slabs to market here. It is a university city rather than a sightseeing one. Drone strikes on residential streets have made it unusable for travellers.
