Short description of Simien Mountains
The Simien escarpment falls away in walls a thousand metres high, eroded out of an old basalt shield into pinnacles and flat topped mesas that were among the first landscapes anywhere to be made world heritage. Gelada graze in troops of hundreds and let walkers come close. The walia ibex lives on these cliffs and nowhere else on earth, and the Ethiopian wolf hunts the moorland above. Ras Dashen at the eastern end of the range is the highest point in the whole country. The access road runs through Amhara, where fighting has reached the villages along it.
