Short description of Bishoftu
Five crater lakes sit in the volcanic field around Bishoftu, each in its own steep walled bowl, and the town between them has become the weekend release valve for a capital only forty five minutes up the expressway. Resorts and spas line the shore of the deepest of them and of the prettiest one beside it. One shallow pan on the edge of town fills with flamingos and cranes in the cooler months. The Oromo thanksgiving of Irreecha brings enormous crowds down to the water at Hora as the rains end. Nobody comes here for sights, which is rather the point.
