Description

Kilkenny (Cill Chainnigh) is a charming medieval city on the River Nore and an important centre of Irish history, culture and craft traditions. The cityscape is dominated by Kilkenny Castle, a Norman fortress that was expanded and remodelled over the centuries and is now surrounded by extensive riverside parkland. The Medieval Mile links the castle with the imposing St Canice’s Cathedral, winding through historic streets and past merchant houses such as Rothe House. Kilkenny is also known for its long brewing tradition, lively pub and cultural scene, and renowned festivals. The dark Kilkenny Black Marble, a distinctive local limestone, gave the city its nickname “Marble City” and remains an enduring part of its architectural identity.
