Description
Karasjok is the seat of the Sami parliament and, with Kautokeino, the centre of Sami public life in Norway. The parliament building is a low timber circle with a council chamber shaped like a lavvu, open to visitors when it is not sitting. The old church of 1807 is the only building in Finnmark that survived the German scorched earth retreat of 1944, which is why everything else in town is younger than the church by a century and a half. Sápmi Park tells the Sami story and the river carries some of Europe's best salmon.
