Description
Hammerfest is one of the northernmost cities in the world, located on the shores of the Barents Sea in northern Norway. The town has a long history as a trading and port center and today combines maritime traditions with a modern energy and industrial economy. Hammerfest is known for its Arctic landscapes, the midnight sun and the northern lights, as well as the Meridian Column, which commemorates the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Struve Geodetic Arc. The harbor and Mount Salen shape the townscape, while the Reconstruction Museum and the Polar Bear Society offer insights into local history and Arctic culture. Hammerfest combines Arctic life, maritime heritage and sweeping coastal views.
