Description
Gouyave is a fishing town on the leeward coast and the centre of the nutmeg trade, which for Grenada means the centre of the whole economy for most of the last two hundred years. The processing station on the main street is a wooden shed where women still sort and grade by hand at long tables under the light from open shutters, and it can be walked through on a working morning. On Friday nights the side streets close for Fish Friday and the whole town cooks, which is the one evening a visitor to Grenada is likely to end up here.
