Carriacou
Grenada · 15 m
Description
Carriacou lies three hours by ferry north of Grenada and belongs to the Grenadines in everything but administration, dry and low where the main island is wet and steep. Hillsborough is the one town, Tyrrel Bay the anchorage that fills with cruising yachts, and Sandy Island a bare sandbar in the lagoon that is the classic afternoon. The island builds wooden boats by eye at Windward without plans, keeps a Big Drum dance descended directly from West African nations, and was hit hard enough by hurricane Beryl in 2024 that rebuilding is still visible.
