Short description of Gola Rainforest
Gola is by far the largest surviving block of the forest that once ran unbroken across this whole part of West Africa, and it hides forest elephants, pangolins and one of the rarest birds in Africa in its canopy. Sightings of the big animals are genuinely rare here, but the birding here is genuinely exceptional and the sheer sense of scale is not something this region offers in many other places. Guides from the border villages lead the trails through it. It was inscribed as world heritage together with Tiwai island in 2025 and remains very lightly visited.
