Description
Dovrefjell is the mountain Norwegian nationalism used as a metaphor, and it holds the only wild musk oxen in Europe. About three hundred of them live on the plateau, descended from animals brought over from Greenland in the 1930s, and guided safaris walk out from Hjerkinn to find them at a safe distance. Snøhetta rises to 2286 metres behind, the highest peak in Norway outside Jotunheimen. The wild reindeer pavilion at Tverrfjellet is a timber and glass room built to watch them from, and the Dovre Line stops at the highest station on the network.
