Description
Coro was founded in 1527 and is the oldest surviving town in Venezuela, built of mud brick in a style that borrowed as much from the Dutch traders on Curaçao as from Spain. UNESCO listed it with its port at La Vela in 1993, the first Venezuelan site on the list. Earthen walls, carved wooden doors and shaded courtyards line the streets, and the cathedral is the oldest in the country. North of the town the Médanos are a field of moving sand dunes rising twenty metres between the sea and the desert scrub. Its earthen buildings put the site on the danger list from 2005 until 2018.
