Connemara (Conamara) is a wild and romantic region in the west of County Galway, shaped by vast boglands, lakes, rugged mountains and a dramatic Atlantic coastline. The distinctive Twelve Bens mountain range and Connemara National Park rank among Ireland’s most striking landscapes, offering scenic walking trails and sweeping views. One of the region’s best-known landmarks is Kylemore Abbey, a neo-Gothic castle on the shores of Kylemore Lough surrounded by a restored Victorian walled garden. Clifden serves as the region’s main town and gateway to the spectacular Sky Road along the coast. More than almost anywhere else in Ireland, Connemara captures the openness, wilderness and rugged beauty of the Atlantic west.
