Description
Ciudad Bolívar stands where the Orinoco narrows to under a kilometre, which is why it was founded here in 1764 and called “Angostura” after that narrows. The congress that Bolívar opened in 1819 met in a plain hall off the main square, and the bitters invented by a German army doctor in the town still carry its old name although they have been made in Trinidad since 1875. Coloured colonial houses step down to the riverfront and a suspension bridge crosses above the town. Jimmie Angel's aircraft stands at the airport, from which light planes leave for Canaima.
