Description
Charlestown is the capital of Nevis and has changed very little since the eighteenth century, when the island was rich enough on sugar to run a spa resort and be called the “Queen of the Caribbees”. The stone and timber houses along Main Street are largely original, Alexander Hamilton was born in one of them and it is now the island museum, and the Bath Hotel above town was the first hotel in the Caribbean and still has its hot springs running. Behind everything the Nevis Peak trail climbs into permanent cloud, and plantation inns ring the mountain.
