Description
Brimstone Hill is a fortress built by enslaved Africans on a volcanic plug above the leeward coast, begun in 1690 and worked on for a hundred years until it covered the whole hilltop in cut black stone. The British called it the Gibraltar of the West Indies and lost it once to the French, in 1782, after a month of siege. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the view from the Citadel parade takes in Sint Eustatius, Saba, Saba Bank and on a clear day Nevis. The Romney Manor estate and its rainforest garden sit at the foot of the same road.
