Description
Basseterre is the capital of St. Kitts and Nevis and takes in far more cruise passengers in a year than the federation has residents, most of them stepping off at Port Zante and walking straight into town. The centre is a small grid of Georgian and colonial stone around the Circus, a roundabout with a green cast iron clock tower modelled on Piccadilly, and Independence Square a block away was the slave market before it was a garden. The old sugar railway now runs tourist carriages around the island, and the ferry to Nevis leaves from the wharf.
