Description
Castries is the capital of St. Lucia and where the cruise ships tie up, two of them at a time at Pointe Seraphine across the water from the town. Fire took the old wooden centre twice, so what stands is mostly twentieth century, but Derek Walcott Square keeps its samaan tree and the cathedral beside it is painted inside floor to ceiling by Dunstan St. Omer in colours no other Caribbean church has. The covered market on Peynier Street is the real one. Morne Fortune above the town holds the old barracks and the view down the whole west coast.
