Description
Barquisimeto is the fourth city of Venezuela and calls itself the musical capital, with a semi-desert of columnar cactus beginning where the streets end. On the fourteenth of January the image of the Divina Pastora is carried from Santa Rosa into the city, and the crowd that walks with it has been counted in the millions, which makes it one of the largest Marian processions anywhere. The Flor de Venezuela, sixteen steel petals designed by Fruto Vivas for the Hanover world fair in 2000, was re-erected here in 2008. A train runs east into Yaracuy state. The city sits at 566 metres above the plain.
