Short description of Volunteer Point
Volunteer Point holds the largest king penguin colony of the Falkland Islands, a crowd of more than a thousand pairs standing on a green plain behind a long white beach. Gentoo penguins nest nearby, and Magellanic penguins dig their burrows in the dunes. The site lies on a private farm north of Stanley and is reached in about two and a half hours by four-wheel drive, the last part across open peat with no road at all. Almost everyone comes on a guided day tour, many from cruise ships, and a small fee is paid to the landowner.
