Falkland Islands · West Falkland

Short description of Port Howard

Port Howard is the largest settlement on West Falkland, a sheep farm of white houses and red roofs at the head of a sheltered inlet below Mount Maria. Its lodge is the main base for the sea trout rivers of the west, the Warrah and the Chartres, fished by anglers who fly in on the island plane for several nights in the southern autumn. The settlement held an Argentine garrison in 1982, and a small museum in the old farm buildings keeps what was left behind. Walks lead up the hills behind the farm, and the ferry across Falkland Sound from New Haven docks here.
