Short description of Sea Lion Island

Sea Lion Island is the southernmost inhabited island of the Falklands and its best known wildlife lodge, a forty minute flight from Stanley on the small island plane. Southern elephant seals haul out on its beaches by the hundred, and from October to December orcas patrol close inshore to hunt the pups. Sea lions, gentoo and rockhopper penguins and a colony of imperial shags share the coast, while cats and rats were never introduced, so small birds thrive in the tussac grass. A memorial on the cliffs remembers the crew of HMS Sheffield, sunk nearby in 1982.
