Short description of Saunders Island

Saunders Island is a large farm island off the north of West Falkland with a rare mix of wildlife in one place. At The Neck, a sandy isthmus between two bays, king, gentoo, rockhopper and Magellanic penguins all nest within a short walk, beside black-browed albatrosses and imperial shags on the cliffs. Port Egmont, near the settlement, was the first British base in the islands in 1765, and its stone ruins remain. Cruise ships land often, and the farm keeps self-catering cottages at The Neck for visitors who fly in on the island plane and stay a few days.
