Description
Udon Thani (อุดรธานี) is a major city in northeastern Thailand and an important center of the Isan region. The area combines an exceptional archaeological heritage with striking natural landscapes and a vibrant regional culture. Ban Chiang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, is one of Southeast Asia’s most significant prehistoric archaeological sites. Phu Phrabat, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024, is known for its unusual sandstone formations, prehistoric rock paintings and the world’s largest collection of Sīma stones from the Dvaravati period. Udon Thani is also known for the seasonal Red Lotus Sea, Buddhist temples, local markets and distinctive Isan cuisine. The city is an important gateway for exploring northeastern Thailand.
