Description
The Golden Triangle (สามเหลี่ยมทองคำ) is the famous border region where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak rivers. The area was once one of the most important centers of opium cultivation and trade in Southeast Asia. Today the modern Hall of Opium Museum serves as a reminder of this turbulent past. The riverside village of Sop Ruak attracts visitors with a viewpoint overlooking three countries, a large golden Buddha, and boat trips on the Mekong. Just a few kilometers away, the historic town of Chiang Saen impresses with ancient temple ruins and the remnants of a former royal city of the Lanna Kingdom. The Golden Triangle combines stunning landscapes, fascinating history, and cultural heritage to create one of northern Thailand’s most famous tourist destinations.
