Description
Terezín is a historic fortress town in the Czech Republic, founded by the Habsburgs in the late 18th century and transformed under Nazi occupation into a ghetto, prison, and site of deportation. From 1941, the ghetto served as a collection and transit point for tens of thousands of Jews, many of whom were later deported to ghettos and extermination camps farther east. The Small Fortress operated as a Gestapo prison for political prisoners. Today, the Ghetto Museum, Small Fortress, and other preserved sites commemorate the victims, document life and cultural activity in the ghetto, and reveal the realities behind Nazi persecution, deportation, and propaganda.
