Description
Český Ráj, meaning “Bohemian Paradise”, is a scenic region in northern Bohemia and was the first protected landscape area established in the former Czechoslovakia. The region is characterized by striking sandstone rock formations, dense forests, castle ruins and historic châteaux, making it one of the country’s most distinctive natural and cultural landscapes. Highlights include the Hruboskalsko rock city, with its towering sandstone pillars and Hrubá Skála Château, and the dramatic ruins of Trosky Castle, perched on two volcanic basalt outcrops. Český Ráj is also a historic cradle of Czech sandstone climbing. Numerous hiking trails wind through gorges, rock cities and a richly varied cultural landscape.
