Description
Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and the most visited city in the Baltic states, close enough to Helsinki that the ferry crossing takes two hours and brings day trippers by the thousand. Its old town is among the best preserved medieval centres in northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still ringed by most of its wall and twenty odd towers. The merchant town below and the fortified upper town on Toompea hill were separate jurisdictions for centuries and the stairways between them were locked at night. Outside the walls the city runs to glass towers and the reclaimed Telliskivi factory quarter.
