Description
Hiiumaa is the second island of Estonia and quieter still than Saaremaa, a low platform of pine forest and juniper with fewer than ten thousand people on it. Kõpu lighthouse near the western tip is one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world, a solid stone tower begun in 1531 and visible far out in the Baltic. Islanders keep a dry humour about their own remoteness that Estonians quote back at them. Sand beaches run along the northern coast and the ferry from the mainland takes ninety minutes.
