Pärnu, Estonia

Pärnu

Estonia · 5 m

Description

Pärnu is the summer capital of Estonia, a spa town on the west coast whose beach is wide, shallow and backed by pine woods and a park laid out when the resort was built for the Russian empire. Mud baths have been taken here since 1838 and the sanatoria are still the reason many Estonians and Finns come. The wooden villas of the resort quarter survive in numbers, and a stone gate of the seventeenth century is all that is left of the old fortifications. In July the population multiplies and the beach bars run late.
