Description
Saaremaa is the largest island in Estonia and was a closed military zone for most of the Soviet period, which left it quiet and largely undeveloped. Kuressaare on the south coast holds the only fully preserved medieval castle in the Baltics, a square keep with corner towers standing in its own moat. Nine meteorite craters sit at Kaali, the largest a water filled bowl a hundred metres across that fell within human memory and entered local legend. Juniper scrub, windmills and limestone cliffs at Panga define the rest.
