Description
Narva sits on the Russian border at the eastern end of Estonia, and the border here is a river with a castle on each bank facing the other across two hundred metres of water. Hermann Castle on the Estonian side was begun by the Danes in the thirteenth century, Ivangorod on the Russian side by Ivan III in 1492 specifically to answer it. The town behind is almost entirely Russian speaking and was rebuilt in Stalinist blocks after the old baroque centre was destroyed in 1944. Narva-Jõesuu on the coast has a long sand beach.
