Description
Sukur is a hilltop settlement in the Mandara mountains near the Cameroonian border and was the first cultural landscape in Africa inscribed by UNESCO. The chief's palace of dry stone stands at the top, reached by a paved processional way of granite slabs laid centuries ago and climbing the hillside in long flights. Terraced fields step down the slopes below it, and the remains of iron smelting furnaces are scattered through the settlement, since Sukur supplied iron across the region. The whole arrangement of palace, terraces and shrines has continued unchanged for centuries.
