Faroe Islands

Short description of Suðuroy

Suðuroy is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands, two hours by car ferry from Tórshavn to Krambatangi near Tvøroyri, and far quieter than the northern isles. Its west coast is a wall of cliffs, highest at Beinisvørð, which drops almost 470 metres into the sea near Sumba. The green valley of Hvannhagi opens behind a ridge above Tvøroyri. The church in Famjin keeps the first Faroese flag, sewn by students in 1919. At Akraberg a lighthouse marks the southern tip. A car is needed to link the villages, and a stay of two nights suits the ferry times.
