Faroe Islands
Short description of Sandoy
Sandoy is the gentlest of the Faroe Islands, low and rolling with sand dunes and lakes, named for the beach at its main village of Sandur. Since the end of 2023 a subsea tunnel links it by road to Streymoy, and it has become an easy day out from Tórshavn. Tracks lead to the cliff bay of Søltuvík and the villages of Skálavík, Húsavík and Dalur. At Húsavík the ruins of a medieval farm are tied to a rich lady of the sagas. From Sandur a small ferry crosses to Skúvoy, where the Viking chief Sigmundur Brestisson lies buried.
