Description
St Peter Port is the capital of Guernsey and one of the most attractive harbour towns in the Channel Islands, its granite houses rising in tiers from the quays to the ridge above. Castle Cornet guards the harbour mouth from an islet joined to the town by a breakwater, and a gun is still fired there every day. Victor Hugo wrote much of his later work at Hauteville House, which he decorated himself from floor to ceiling. Steep cobbled streets, Candie Gardens and the Guernsey Museum sit above the shopping lanes. Boats leave the quays for Herm, Sark and Alderney.
