Description
Herm is the smallest of the Channel Islands open to visitors, barely two kilometres long, free of cars and reached by a twenty minute boat from St Peter Port. A single track circles it past the harbour, the tiny settlement of Le Manoir and the Norman chapel of St Tugual. Shell Beach on the north east side is built not of sand but of shell fragments carried up by the Gulf Stream, and Belvoir Bay beside it is the sheltered swimming cove. The Common at the northern end is low grazed dune grassland full of wild flowers. Day visitors outnumber the handful of residents.
