Description
Shimla (शिमला) is the capital of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, situated on a forested ridge in the foothills of the western Himalayas at an elevation of over 2,200 m (7,200 ft). The former summer capital of British India is renowned for its well-preserved colonial architecture, pleasant mountain climate, and scenic setting. Its most notable attractions include the pedestrian-friendly Mall Road, the Ridge, the neo-Gothic Christ Church, and the historic Viceregal Lodge, where the 1945 Simla Conference took place. Another landmark is the UNESCO World Heritage Kalka–Shimla Railway, a narrow-gauge line that climbs nearly 96 km (60 mi) through more than 100 tunnels and numerous bridges from the plains into the mountains. Shimla combines colonial heritage with the natural beauty of the Himalayas and remains one of northern India's most popular hill stations.
