Description

Varanasi (वाराणसी), also known as “Kashi” or “Banaras”, is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities and one of Hinduism's holiest places. Located on the banks of the Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, the ancient pilgrimage city is renowned for its stone ghats, centuries-old temples, and daily religious rituals along the river. Millions of pilgrims visit Varanasi each year to bathe in the sacred Ganges or to perform final rites at its cremation ghats, as dying here is believed in Hindu tradition to help attain moksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Narrow alleys, traditional silk weaving, bustling markets, and outstanding street food add to the city's distinctive character. Blending profound spirituality with living traditions and a rich cultural heritage, Varanasi is widely regarded as the spiritual heart of India.
