Serra da Capivara (Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara) lies in the dry caatinga of the Brazilian state of Piauí and protects the largest concentration of prehistoric rock art in the Americas. More than a thousand archaeological sites shelter paintings of hunts, dances and daily life beneath sandstone overhangs and along deep canyons. The best known is Boqueirão da Pedra Furada, a vast rock shelter whose walls carry over a thousand images. Marked circuits with wooden walkways lead through the gorges, and the Museu do Homem Americano in nearby São Raimundo Nonato explains the finds. Remote and thinly visited, the park rewards travellers willing to reach Brazil's far interior.
