Description
Campos do Jordão is the highest town in Brazil, set among araucaria forest on the Serra da Mantiqueira in São Paulo state. Cold winters made it a health resort long before they made it fashionable, and the centre of Vila Capivari now trades in fondue, chocolate and half timbered facades borrowed from the Alps. The Winter Festival fills its halls with classical music through July, the town's busiest weeks by far. Above the streets the Horto Florestal state park protects pine woods and streams, and a chairlift and the old mountain railway carry visitors to viewpoints over the range.
