Description
São Miguel das Missões is one of Brazil's most important historic sites and among the finest surviving examples of the Jesuit Missions in South America. The former Jesuit reduction of São Miguel Arcanjo was founded in the late 17th century, while its monumental Baroque church was built during the 18th century. Together with several other Jesuit mission sites in Argentina, it forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by Guaraní artisans under Jesuit supervision, the sandstone ruins rise dramatically from the rolling plains of Rio Grande do Sul, offering a vivid impression of the missions' former grandeur. An evening sound-and-light show brings the history of the Guaraní people and the Jesuit missions to life, making a visit especially memorable.
