Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal

Sagarmatha National Park

Nepal · Koshi · 3440 m

Description

Sagarmatha National Park (सगरमाथा) protects the Nepalese side of Everest, which Nepali names Sagarmatha and Tibetan “Chomolungma”, and was inscribed by UNESCO in 1979. Almost everyone arrives by air at Lukla, on a short shelf of runway cut into a hillside, and continues on foot because there are no roads. Namche Bazaar at 3,440 metres is the hub, a bowl of lodges and shops that doubles as the main acclimatisation stop and holds a Saturday market drawing traders from surrounding valleys. The classic route continues past the monastery at Tengboche to Everest Base Camp and the viewpoint on Kala Patthar, which is where the mountain is actually best seen. This is the homeland of the Sherpa, whose villages, gompas and mountaineering history are as much the point as the peaks.
