Dhulikhel, Nepal

Dhulikhel

Nepal · Bagmati · 1550 m

Description

Dhulikhel (धुलिखेल) sits on the valley's eastern edge above the old trade road to Tibet, and combines a genuine Newar old town with the same Himalayan panorama that draws people to Nagarkot. Its lower quarter has brick houses, carved windows and small courtyard shrines that are still in daily use rather than restored for visitors. The view from the ridge above town takes in Langtang, Dorje Lakpa and Ganesh Himal, and is at its clearest in the cold, dry weeks after the monsoon. Dhulikhel is the usual base for the walk to Namobuddha, a hilltop Buddhist monastery where legend has a prince give his body to a starving tigress. The medieval town of Panauti, with a temple complex at the meeting of two rivers, lies a short drive south.
