Langtang

Nepal · Bagmati · 3430 m

Description

Langtang (लाङटाङ) is the closest high Himalayan valley to Kathmandu, reachable by road and then on foot without a domestic flight. The trek climbs from Syabrubesi through oak and rhododendron forest into a glacial valley below Langtang Lirung, ending at the small monastery settlement of Kyanjin Gompa. From there day walks lead up Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri for close views of ice walls and the Langtang glacier. The valley was hit hard in 2015, when an earthquake-triggered avalanche buried Langtang village, and the rebuilt lodges now stand beside a memorial. North and west, the Tamang Heritage Trail links Tamang villages of Tibetan descent, and the lake basin at Gosainkunda draws thousands of Hindu pilgrims at the August full moon.
