Annapurna Base Camp
Nepal · Gandaki · 4130 m
Description
Annapurna Base Camp (अन्नपूर्ण) sits at 4,130 metres on the floor of the Annapurna Sanctuary, a glacial amphitheatre ringed almost completely by peaks above 7,000 metres. The only way in is a narrow gorge between Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli, which is why the basin stays hidden until the last hour of the walk. Annapurna I rises directly above the camp and was the first eight-thousander ever climbed, in 1950. The approach from Pokhara climbs through Gurung villages such as Ghandruk and Chhomrong and through rhododendron forest that flowers through March and April. Many walkers combine the sanctuary with the short climb to Poon Hill above Ghorepani, the most popular sunrise viewpoint in the region, and soak afterwards in the riverside hot springs at Jhinu Danda.
