South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands · South Georgia
Short description of Right Whale Bay
Right Whale Bay is a wide bay near the northwestern end of South Georgia, backed by steep green slopes and snowy peaks, and one of the landings expedition ships use most often when the Bay of Isles is closed by weather or crowded with fur seals. A king penguin colony spreads over the plain at its head, with chicks in brown woolly coats gathered among the adults. In early summer the beach is packed with fur seal bulls guarding their harems, and elephant seals lie further along the shore. When the surf is too high to land, ships cruise along the beach by inflatable boat to see the colony from the water.
