Short description of Fortuna Bay
Fortuna Bay is a glacier-fed inlet on the north coast of South Georgia, known for its king penguin colony and as the start of the Shackleton Walk. In May 1916 Ernest Shackleton, Frank Worsley and Tom Crean crossed the unmapped interior of the island to reach help, and passed this bay on the last stretch of the journey. Expedition ships land walkers here to follow them over the pass beside Crean Lake to Stromness, a hike of about three hours, while the ship sails round to collect them. The whaling station at Stromness, where the three men walked in, is closed to visitors because of asbestos but can be seen from outside.
