Short description of Prion Island
Prion Island is a small tussac-covered island in the Bay of Isles, and the one place on South Georgia where visitors can watch wandering albatrosses at the nest. A wooden boardwalk climbs from the landing to viewing platforms on the ridge, where the largest wingspan of any bird can be seen folded over a single chick. Because the island was never reached by rats, the South Georgia pipit, the only songbird of the Antarctic, sings in the grass. Only small groups may land at a time, and the island closes for several weeks in early summer while the fur seals pup on its beach.
