Description
Rakiraki lies at the northern tip of Viti Levu, in the driest corner of Fiji, where the Kings Road rounds the island and the Nakauvadra range rises behind the cane fields. Offshore the small island of Nananu-i-Ra holds the beaches and the budget lodges, reached in minutes by boat from Ellington Wharf. The trade winds that keep this coast dry also make it the country's kitesurfing and windsurfing centre. North of the headland lies Bligh Water and the Vatu-i-Ra Passage, whose soft coral ranks among the richest in Fiji. The tomb of the chief Udre Udre sits beside the road into town.
