Description
Levuka stands on the eastern shore of Ovalau and was the first colonial capital of Fiji, the port where the chiefs ceded the islands to Britain. One street of timber shopfronts under corrugated verandas runs along the seafront beneath forested hills, and the town is inscribed as a World Heritage site for that mixture of Pacific settlement and colonial trading port. The Sacred Heart church and its clock tower mark the middle of the street. Behind the town the Mission Hill steps climb to a view across the reef, and the village of Lovoni sits in the extinct crater at the island's centre.
